About Tommaso Bussola When former stonemason Tommaso Bussola joined his uncle Giuseppe Bussolo’s estate in the mid-1970s, he immersed himself entirely. Tommaso’s field of... study encompassed the grapes and traditions of Valpolecella winemaking, and his singular focus helped him to identify Corvinone, a variant of Valpolicella’s regular component Corvina. This grape, which Tommaso refers to as “Super-Corvina,” along with his use of low-yielding clones, old vines, and barrique, led him to develop an intense and opulent style of wine. Although the Bussola estate had a long history of making wine with traditional methods, in the 1990s, the team chose to explore a more international style with the use of barrique. Rather than completely abandoning his former practices, however, the estate created a dual portfolio where the traditional bottlings are labeled BG (in homage to Tommaso’s uncle Giuseppe), and the international styles, which are the higher priced of the two lines, gets a TB designation. Aside from Tommaso’s high level of skill in winemaking, Bussola’s myriad vineyards with multiple microclimates are the estate’s biggest asset, making Bussola one of the Veneto’s most exciting estates for both traditional and modern-leaning wines.
