A luscious German Pinot Noir. Mention Pinot Noir and your mind immediately goes to Burgundy or New Zealand, most quality Pinot Noir is associated with France and can be quite pricey. One of our most interesting finds this year has to be the amazing Pinot Noirs from Germany. This particular wine from Karl Johner is divine. Delicate dark berries and wild cherry, underlined with great spiciness on the nose. A soft and supple palate with balanced acidity, softening but present tannins, round and luscious combined with great minerality and a long and lingering finish. This is a brilliant and original blend of four vintages, from different vineyards on Johner’s estate. Barrel-aged 2005 Bischoffinger Steinbuck gives richness, a 2007 from the same plot good structure, 2009 Enselberg adds softer fleshy texture and 2010 Steinbuck and Oberrotweiler Eichberg contribute freshness and fruit. Match this wonderful wine with lamb, game, roast duck, fish, chicken, mushroom dishes and salmon.
